I know this is being marketed as the classic tinkertoy set, but it's not the same quality as the original. I grew up with a set of Tinkertoys, and had hours of fun with them. However, this set is a different matter. First, it's a bit on the skimpy side, for the money. The plans with it show some interesting designs, but are a bit of a reach. Of course, there's only so much one can do with a small set.
This set was purchased for my 6 year old son. He's great at building things, Legos, blocks, etc. However, he was a little frustrated by this toy. It's because of the fit of the pieces. Some fit too tight, or can't be inserted in each other, others are way too loose, so the constructed items fall apart easily. This was not a problem on the original set I had in my youth. Also, because of the wood quality itself, some of the ends of the rods broke very easily. Once this happens, the piece is no longer useable in the set. We're down to about 2/3 of the original rods now.
My son does play with this, and constructs small things with it, but it's really not worth the money. I would suggest buying a larger set, and ensuring the quality is adequate before keeping the set. I cannot recommend this toy very strongly, but there are worse things out there.

Being as I was born in the fifties I still remember the tinkertoys from that era. This set (and doubtlessly the other sets) is direct-to-landfill junk. The sticks are different diameters stick-to-stick, color-to-color, they don't fit tightly in the wooden pieces, there are !2! hub pieces, the two idlers are useless since they have no holes in the circumference, the yellow plastic hinges all fall out.
Sorry. Ridiculuosly lousy design changes and QC. Don't buy this for your kids.
